Every Community Has Its Special Events – Ballarat Is No Different!
In a community that has something happening every month of the year,
there are festivals, horse races, street fairs, performances and so much
more. Consider this partial list of events and activities you may want
to attend during your holiday in Ballarat. Close enough for a day trip
from Melbourne, Ballarat is the perfect get away for a family day out of
the city.
January
Australia Day Ballarat – look towards the end of January for this
time of celebration that includes live bands, buskers, food stalls and
end the evening with the spectacular 3BA FM Fireworks finale.
February
Ballarat and Western Victoria Australian Great Outdoors Expo - This
outdoors expo is dedicated to those with a love of the great outdoor
sporting and recreational events. Find the gear you need or maybe
something that you just want for fishing, camping, four wheel driving,
boating, caravanning or any other outdoor sport you can think of.
Usually held the first weekend in February, you will not want to miss
this wonderful opportunity to see, examine and purchase all your new
toys for your outdoor recreational enjoyment.
March
Annual Ballarat Antique Fair - Australia’s largest antique sale and
fair, more than 100 exhibitors from all over the country with a wide
range of quality antiques and collectables for sale.
May
Ballarat Autumn Day Ride annually held in May, is a set route with
approximately 600-800 bicycle riders of every ability level. This fully
supported bike tours of 50, 75 or 100 kilometres, has grown to be very
popular. You can register on the day of the ride, or pre-register the
day prior.
September
Taste, Ballarat Food & Wine Expo – a relatively new event that is
designed to showcase the fabulous wines and gourmet foods from the
Central Victoria and Goldfields area. More than 50 exhibitors offer
tastings as well as the sale of a vast array of award winning wines,
sweet treats, cheeses an much more.
October
The CHHA Family and Local History Expo – typically held annually in
the first weekend in October, the Central Highlands Historical
Association offers may the opportunities to research family and local
history.
Ballarat Orchid Club Spring Show – typically held in mid-October, the
show contains multiple varieties of orchids on display. There are also
hybrids and species from a large area that are not easily found. Learn
the proper way to pot your plants, and speak to the orchid guru’s about
any problems your orchids may be having and how to resolve those issues.
November
The Grand National Eisteddfod – The longest running and largest royal
south street competitions in Australia. More than 8,000 competitors in
over twenty disciplines of the performing arts.
Great Victorian Bike Event – typically held the last week in November
through the first week in December, this is the ultimate cycling
vacation. Nine days of cycling and camping adventure through
590kilmetres of Victoria’s most magical countryside between and around
the spectacular Grampains National Park.
The Ballarat Cup – as always, this year’s event will bring in over
17,000 people to attend the major Turf event of the year. Enjoy live
entertainment, celebrity guests, fashions on the field and more. The
last big event of the spring, this fantastic carnival event is not to be
missed.
December
Christmas Day Race – start your holiday party celebrations with a day
at the races. This fabulous sporting event is a great way to kick off
your holiday festivities, there are plenty of activities for the kids
and even Santa will stop by for a visit.
